Amesbury Lives and Times
In the ‘Exhibition’ dropdown menu are the pages from an exhibition held in Amesbury parish church in 2005. The exhibition provided an overview of the history and circumstances of the church, the abbey, and their environs. The exhibition proved to be a popular attraction. Now we are considering creating a follow-up to the original exhibition, with some of the ground-work already under way. The purpose of this new exhibition would be to provide a deeper focus on the town’s medieval abbey and priory - particularly through literary works - to consider the extent and the importance of this once-
famous medieval establishment. A new exhibition will be a major undertaking, if you are interested and would like to help, any offers of help will be welcomed and very much appreciated.

The Nile Clumps, Amesbury
by Peter Goodhugh
"The celebration of Amesbury's millennium in 1979 required considerable research into the town's history. One element of this was with the group of tree clumps known as the Nile clumps, on Stonehenge Down just to the north-west of the town. Tradition had it that the trees were planted to celebrate the English victory by Admiral Nelson at the Battle of the Nile in 1798. No definitive evidence was found in support of that theory."
